Awakening Thuan Hoa’s tourism potential

25/06/2026 - 16:40

Located along National Highway 4C, the main route leading to the Dong Van Karst Plateau, and situated on the renowned “Ha Giang Loop,” Thuan Hoa Commune is gradually emerging as an attractive destination in Vietnam’s northern highlands. Blessed with diverse natural landscapes and the rich cultural heritage of the Hmong, Tay, and Dao ethnic communities, the locality is working to unlock its tourism potential and create new momentum for socio-economic development.

The Mien River winds through villages and mountain slopes, creating a picturesque natural landscape.

One of Thuan Hoa’s most distinctive attractions is the Mien River 5A hydropower reservoir, where emerald waters weave gracefully through majestic mountain ranges, creating a tranquil and poetic setting. Another highlight is Khau Meng Cave, one of the largest cave systems discovered in the area. Featuring spectacular stalactites, underground lakes, and natural waterfalls, the cave offers significant potential for adventure and exploration tourism.

Beyond its natural beauty, Thuan Hoa is also home to a wealth of cultural traditions. The Tay people’s traditional green rice flake craft and the annual Green Rice Pounding Festival have become unique cultural tourism products, drawing increasing numbers of visitors. Traditional Then singing, the sounds of the Tinh lute, and long-preserved customs continue to enrich the visitor experience and showcase the region’s cultural identity.

Recognizing tourism as a key economic sector, local authorities have adopted a dedicated strategy for sustainable tourism development. The commune has gradually established rest stops and visitor services linked to indigenous cultural experiences. Among the standout initiatives is the tourism-agriculture model developed by Cat Ly Cooperative. Originally a large-scale yellow cattle farm, the cooperative has expanded into tourism by developing a restaurant, scenic stopover facilities, and recreational services around the Song Mien reservoir, attracting approximately 200 visitors daily.

With growing participation from local people, Thuan Hoa is steadily building a diverse community-based tourism ecosystem. A major boost is expected from a recently planned glass bridge project spanning the Mien River, integrated with a zipline system and reservoir tourism activities. With a total investment of approximately VND 200 billion, the project is scheduled to break ground later this year. It is expected to become a landmark attraction, further enhancing Thuan Hoa’s appeal and positioning it as a prominent destination on the northern highlands tourism map.
